STARS GO CARTOON CRAZY
G'DAY!
I enjoyed meeting all the Star Guests who
have come into the studio to tell me about
their favourite cartoons. It was a real pleasure
talking to my old friend Tony Hart and com-
paring notes on animation techniques with
him. He told me how when he was small he
used to go to the cinema and how the animated
films he saw, encouraged him to take up
drawing. It just goes to show how influential
cartoons can be!
Rolf’s Big Draw
Later in the series Tony and I teamed up
together to create a giant drawing together.
That may not sound very unusual, but the way
we did the drawing certainly was! It was like a
game of ‘Musical Chairs', only when the music
stopped, Tony and I had to swap positions -
I had to carry on with his drawing, and he
continued with mine. The result is a series of
crazy fantastical creations! Look out for it
later in the series.
Singing, Soap
and Sport Stars
As well as artists Tony Hart and Neil
Buchanan, I met an array of different stars
from all different walks of life. I talked to
pop stars, sporting personalities and soap
stars... and I found that all of them had a story
to tell about cartoons that they have enjoyed.
Television presenter Andy Crane admitted
that he liked the cartoon character Garfield
because like him, the cat can’t stand Monday
mornings!
Naturalist Chris Packham as a child was
fascinated with ‘Dastardly and Mutley’ for a
very different reason. Chris told me that he
is the world’s worst loser, and that he could
never understand why Dastardly and Mutley
NEVER won any of the Wacky Races.
Similarly, he always wanted Wile E. Coyote to
catch the Roadrunner and found it frustrating
when he didn’t!
Talking of Roadrunner, Neighbours’ star
Linda Hartley used to dread the Wile E.
Coyote cartoon when she went to the cinema
vwth her mother, not because she didn’t enjoy
it but because her mother would laugh so
loudly, everyone in the cinema turned round
to stare at her. Linda has never forgotten the
embarassment!
Tessa Sanderson’s story was different.
She loved Top Cat because he always won.....
something as a child she wanted to do.
And that’s exactly what the Olympic Gold
Medalist became - a winner!
So keep up the cartooning and you never
know, you might be a famous animator
one day. Rolf
ROLF HEADS
FOR THE CHARTS!
Rolf has been very busy working with his
Workshoppers making the animated video for
his new single, ‘Sun-a-Rise' which is being
released on EMI Records with ‘Two Little
Boys’ on the B side, in October. The artwork
for the single cover (above) is the two colour
lino-cut Rolf made for the original cover when
the song was first released almost thirty
years ago, in 1962.
Who knows? - if Rolf’s record becomes a
hit, we might see our very own Workshoppers’
animations on Top of the Pops!
