The Disney Studio Story
A fabulous history of Walt Disney and his
films with facts and photographs of not only
his animated movies but also his non-
animated creations. Everyone here from
Mickey Mouse to Winnie the Pooh. Great
value if you can get hold of a copy - it’s an
American book but some bookshops may
stock it.
Written by Richard Holliss and Brian Sibley

That’s All Folks
by Steve Schneider, looks at the genius of
Warner Brothers Cartoons, from Bugs Bunny
to Wile E. Coyote. This book is fascinating -
there are rare artwork reproductions,
wonderful colour pictures of all the Warner
characters, and loads of information on how
they were first created.

How to Draw Cartoons
As featured on Rolf’s Cartoon Club we
recommend this book very highly indeed.
Renowned cartoonist Maddocks provides a
simple step-by-step guide to drawing
cartoons in a humorous and light-hearted
manner. Beautifully presented and illustrated.

Animation - a guide to
Animated Film Techniques
This is a practical guide for beginners and
experienced film makers alike. Covering all
different aspects of animation, it contains
hundreds of colour photographs and lots of
case studies.

Looney Tunes
and Merrie Melodies
by Jerry Beck and Will Friedwald. As it says
on the cover "Everything you ever wanted
to know about Warner Bros. Cartoons but
were afraid to ask!" This is a sort of
programme guide with complete summaries
of every single Warners cartoon from 1930
to 1988. This book might be rather difficult
to buy because it is imported from America,
but if you are a real fan, it’s worth a go.

Before Mickey -

An extremely detailed history of cartoons
before Mickey Mouse, looking at such
characters as Felix the Cat who was a fore-
runner of animated film. There are over a
hundred black and white illustrations and
a great deal of information and history.

CoojeBear and the Monster
This storybook by Barry Booth and Robert
Gray, is illustrated by none other than Rolf
himself! The story follows Coojebear’s
adventures with Nessie the Loch Ness

ON VIDEO


There are many cartoons on video now which
you can buy in the shops. We thought we‘d
pick out three which are representative of the
different types of videos on the market.

Fred Flintstone’s
How to Draw Pack
This video goes behind the scenes of the
famous animators Hanna Barbera, creators
of Scooby Doo and Yogi Bear, to see how
their famous cartoons are made. The video
includes a step-by-step lesson on how to draw
Fred Flintstone and three episodes of ‘The
Flintstones’. As well as the video you get a
pencil, erasor and a drawing book!

Count Duckula - Astro Duck
Cosgrove Hall have released some of the
Count Duckula episodes on video. This
particular compilation contains four episodes
including ‘The Zombie Awakes’ and ‘Astro
Duck'. 80 minutes of cartoons and some
video boxes are musical and play the Duckula
theme on the touch of a button!

Garfield - His Nine Lives
This 60 minute video contains 9 episodes
of Garfield the Cat, created by Jim Davis.
There are several compilations of Garfield
animations so if you’re a true Garfield fan
you might have to spend a small fortune!

Video Collection
These videos are a reflection of the best of
British Animation around at the moment.
The series includes ‘Animation on 4’ - some
of the many animated films shown on
Channel 4 over the last 18 months; ‘Aardman ·
Animations’ - including ‘Creature Comforts’
and ‘Grand Day Out’; and ‘The Brothers
Quay’ - the best of their animations.

Walt Disney Release
We’ve picked out a video we think is truly
fantastic. For the first time, the Disney
classic ‘Fantasia’ is released on video. From
the 4th November this video will be available
for 99 days only! If you haven’t bought a copy
after that, you’ll find it difficult to obtain one!
