ROLF BACK FROM OUTBACK

G'DAY!
It’s great to be back from Australia
in time to catch the repeats of the 1990 series
of Rolf’s Cartoon Club. Hope you’re enjoy-
ing them too. Some of you may remember the
programmes, but there are lots of you newer
members who don’t yet know the treats we
have in store. And those of you workshoppers
looking at yourselves on the screen two years
later, I’d love to hear what you’ve been doing
since you worked here in the HTV Studios
in Bristol.

Autumn Series
We’re all busy getting the next brand new
series ready for you right now, and you’ll be
seeing that in the autumn. I’ll be giving you
some more tips on animation, useful to you
whether you’re an old hand or an absolute
beginner. Even those of you who think you
can’t draw, you know, everybody has to start
somewhere. And who knows, you may even
end up being invited to join our workshop
for a few days. We’ve quite often found that
kids who are quite brilliant at drawing are not
always the best at animation. Some youngsters
who reckon they can’t draw for toffee seem
- to grasp the principles of animation and turn
out fantastically good action on the screen.

Animation Festival
Apart from my trip to Australia, another
good thing that happened to me since I last
wrote to you was visiting the International
Animation Festival in Cardiff earlier this year.
The great news is that we met some of the
big names in animation from around the world,
and you’ll get to meet them in the new series.
But more about the Festival later.

Members’ Work
I’ve just spoken to Kate, who looks after the
Cartoon Club, and she tells me she can hardly
keep up with the fast-growing membership.
(Well, we know she can really - nothing’s too
much for her!) The computer has registered
130,000 names now, and your letters and
applications are still coming in.
I’m really pleased that you’re sending in
all this excellent artwork - we have a great
time sorting it all out, and we particularly
like some of your original storyboards. What
about letting us see some of your finished
work? If any of you have had the chance of
using a camera and bringing your animation
ideas to life, do send in your videos. They
may be very short pieces - after all, animation
takes time and patience - and I wouldn’t
expect them to be done with professional
equipment. I promise you, I’ll guard them
with my life!

Prizewinning Films
In our repeat series that you’re seeing just
now, do look out particularly for another
chance to see a couple of films which have
just won top awards. The programme on 6th
August includes a clip from Feet of Song,
which has just won Erica Russell a special
Jury prize at a Festival which is held in
memory of Hans Christian Andersen, in
Odense, Denmark. And at the same festival,
the Youth jury awarded first prize to Mark
Baker, whose film The Hill Farm is included
in Rolf’s Cartoon Club on 20th August. So
take another look at some of these gems, and
be inspired. We want to see some of you Club
Members winning Festival prizes one day!
