Out of the hundreds of letters we receive at The Cartoon Club
each week, one of the things I get asked the rnost is
“How do I become an Anirnator?" Well, that’s a tricky one
and really there’s no straight forward answer!
The best advice I can give is:
Choose art as one of
your exam subjects
Put together a really good portfolio
of your work, as Colleges and employers
will ask to see it
If you decide that you do not want to
stay at school after you are 16, then
perhaps the best option for you is to
find out if your local Further Education
College runs the 2 Year BTEC
Art & Design Course - this will usually
include animation as part of the syllabus
If you stay on at school to do A-levels
or Scottish Highers, the next step would
be to go on to Higher Education College/
Polytechnic/University
Unfortunately, there are just too many
places for me to list them all - it would
take up the whole newsletter!
Here are just some that we
have picked out for you...

Middlesex University, Cat Hill, Barnet, Herts EN4 8HT

I hope that this gives all you budding
animators some help - but remember
the Careers Service are the real
experts - so have a chat with them
or your Schools Career Officer,
and find out exactly what’s
on offer and where.
Good Luck!

In Production
THE FURLINGS were created by HTV’s
Head of Design and Graphics, Rae Lambert.
And now 20th Century Fox in Hollywood have
used them as the characters in one of their
major releases. So watch out for their appear-
ance at a nearby cinema next year.
Remember Nick Park of Aardman, who won
last year’s Oscar for his animated film
CREATURE COMFORTS? He’s hard at work
making a sequel to his very funny film GRAND
DAY OUT, called THE WRONG TROUSERS.
In Los Angeles they’re making TOM AND
JERRY - THE MOVIE. When the film comes
to the cinemas in about a year’s time, try to
see it, because it’ll be cartoon history in the
making - Tom and Jerry have speaking parts.
Can you imagine what voices you’d give them?
Aardman Animation are hoping that they
might win yet another Oscar this coming
year. They have a new film called LOVES
Me... LOVES ME NOT, from Jeff Newitt.
Technically supposed to be more complex
than some of the big science fiction films
like ALIENS, they were sometimes down
to shooting one frame an hour - just imagine
how long it takes to shoot a whole minute’s
worth of action, when there are 25 frames to
a second!
Freddie the Frog stars in an animated feature
film as F.R.O.7, SECRET AGENT. Due for
release by Rank late this summer, it’s been
made entirely in London, using voices of
famous actors and singers, including Boy
George.
